★ Character Information ★

Character Name: Jonathan Harker
Character Canon: Dracula
Canon Iteration: Canon AU
Character Age: 153, looks 22.
Character Species: Vampire.

★ Out of Character Permissions ★

Backtagging: Completely fine, and loved.
Fourth walling: Absolutely fine! In the AU, Van Helsing published the journals under a pseudonym, and Jonathan knows about it. Jonathan will probably laugh if it's brought up and say none of the actors played him right, and gripe about his friends being misrepresented.
Thread hopping : Completely cool with it.
Content warnings and sensitive subjects: I am good with anything.
Anything else: Nope.

★ In Character Permissions ★

Physical affection: Jonathan is a mostly sweet dude, he is down for physical affection.
Romance: Jonathan is still hung up on Mina. He isn't above short romances, he gets lonely. He refuses to remove his ring, and will always mention his wife.
Violence: I am good with this. He was a hunter for the first 50 or so years of his undead life. He is always ready to fight, more so if it's a just cause.
Injuries : I am good with this. Most injuries will heal with no scars, so long as he isn't starving.
Death: Sure, but he's already dead, technically.
Telepathy and mind-reading: I am completely fine with this, have fun in there.
Content warnings and sensitive subjects related to the character: Suicide, Dead spouse and child (This will rarely come up unless asked, Jonathan doesn't talk about how Mina and their child died and how he reacted. It hurts him too much to talk about without crying, even a century later.) Vampire trauma, heavy guilt, sometimes vampiric eating disorder, violence.
Content warnings and sensitive subjects this character won't be involved in: None.

History
Jonathan Harker grew up in a small orphanage in Exeter where he befriended another orphan named Wilhelmina Murray. They were very close in their youth, and in school befriended a girl named Lucy Westenra who was Mina's best friend. Jonathan and Lucy were on friendly terms, but he was never as close to her as Mina was. In these years, Mina and Jonathan often got chastised for improper behaviors such as him walking holding her arm instead of her holding his and other improper gender issues.

These behaviors mostly stopped when they grew older and Mina went off to teach etiquette and Jonathan went to his father figure, Mr. Hawkins to learn to become a solicitor. Though, he does hold her arm once more while they walked through the streets when he was recovering from his ordeal in Transylvania, which gave Mina a thrill.

When Mr. Hawkins was set to go to Transylvania to finish the sale of Carfax Abbey to a Count Dracula, Jonathan had just passed his exams and was a full solicitor, and Mr. Hawkins gout flared, so he sent Jonathan in his place. By now, Jonathan had already proposed to Mina, and while he was unhappy with her staying with Lucy due to her money and knowing he couldn't provide that life for her, he was happy she was with a friend while he was gone on such important business.

While enroute to the castle, Jonathan ignored a LOT of red flags, people crossing themselves begging him to delay his journey and even a woman forcing a rosery on him even though he was protestant, and didn't like such things. He didn't want to be rude, so he accepted it but pushed on. He also discovered his love of Paprika in this time, the food he ate along the way was all duly noted in his diary. When he arrived at Count Dracula's castle, after a hell of a scare from the coachman (Who was also Dracula) he was warmly welcomed inside and fed, the count telling him he had already eaten and laid out some simple rules for his time there while they conducted their business, before telling Jonathan he would be staying a months time to help with his English. Jonathan didn't want this, but he was representing Mr. Hawkins, so he agreed.

As the weeks went on, Jonathan started to feel weak, but that bothered him less than the oddities around the castle, many locked doors, stern words to never fall asleep anywhere outside of the rooms he was permitted too, and even Dracula throwing his shaving mirror out the window after he nicked himself shaving. What finally brought him true terror was looking out the window, after realizing he was a prisoner in the castle, and seeing Dracula scaling down the walls like a lizard. Horror overcame him then.

Refusing to give up, Jonathan started sneaking around, looking for a way to escape and rebelling in little ways. While these rebellions happened, Dracula made Jonathan pen three letters all post marked for different dates saying he had already left and was on his way home. He knew the remaining span of his life with those letters. He tried to drop a secret letter written in short hand to the workers boxing dirt for Dracula… but the workers gave ti to Dracula, who burned it before Jonathan.

Sneaking into a room that clearly had been a room for women ages before, it brought him comfort to be in there, but a wave of exhaustion hit him and he fell asleep in there… waking to three beautiful women around him. Much to his shame, he wanted them to kiss him, but Dracula burst in, and chastised them for touching Jonathan, as he was his and he was not done with the young solicitor yet. He promised them Jonathan when he was done, and to Jonathan's horror, Dracula gave them a wiggling bag… a baby. He had to hear them eat the child as Dracula drug him back to his room. Waking the next day having been changed and put to bed. He realized he was now locked in the room with no means of escape, his travel clothes, money and all documents stolen. That evening the mother of the child was outside the gates screaming, Jonathan wanted to shout for help, but he saw her eaten alive by the wolves, and thought it a mercy to not have to live without her child.

Eventually he started working at shuffling down the wall like Dracula, first finding his room full of lots of different golds, and eventually the mans coffin. Much to his horror Dracula was inside and dead to the world, Jonathan in a fit of hysteria grabbed a shovel and slammed it down on the mans head, leaving a gash across his forehead before he ran in fear. The next evening, Dracula was gone, with the dirt, and he had left Jonathan to those devil women. He gathered the strength to return to the window, deciding to risk the fall or the wolves to try and get home to Mina.

Later, Jonathan was found raving in a train station trying to get home, and was taken to a nunnery, where they decided he had a brain fever, and worked to nurse him back to health. Jonathan charmed the nuns enough that they wrote to Mina to have her come to them. Her and Jonathan were married on August 24th, 1893, while he was too sick to get out of bed. Mina tying a ribbon around his journal promising to never read it unless she thinks he is in danger.

That danger was all too real. Returned to England, Mr. Hawkins moved Mina and Jonathan in with her, making Jonathan a partner in the firm, but died shortly after, leaving everything to Jonathan. Lucy, had died in this time, Mina was distraught. But this brought Dr. Abraham Van Helsing to visit. Mina had just read Jonathan's journal after he had an attack on the street panicking claiming he saw the count in the streets. Within 20 minutes of the talk, Mina and Van Helsing knew that it was vampires. Leading to the creation of the Crew of Light. Lucy's three suitors, the honorable Arthur Holmwood Lord Godalming, Dr. Jack Steward, Quincey P Morris, joined Dr. Van Helsing, Mina and Jonathan in the hunt for Dracula to avenge Lucy.

Each member of the crew had their purpose, Jonathan knew where Dracula's home was, which happened to be next door to Dr. Steward's sanitarium. He also knew how to bribe other solicitor's and with Mina's train fiend ways, travel fast for information to advance their hunt. The problem started here, when the crew convinced Jonathan to stop sharing information with Mina, who had so far been documenting everything. Saying as she was a woman her heart was too weak for the horrors. Even though Jonathan was still recovering and had bouts of lethargy and manic energy. Yet, he agreed, even though he hated the feeling of closing the door of open trust he and Mina had always had.

This opened danger to Mina, as she didn't know what was happening, and one night while Jonathan was asleep next to his wife after a long day, Dracula attacked. Using his power to keep Jonathan asleep as he forced his blood onto Mina. The crew burst into the room but too late, Mina was tainted. When Jonathan was roused his wife was on the floor crying she was unclean, and despite trying to comfort her, she couldn't handle it. Jonathan's hair turned stark white that night.

Mina made everyone swear to kill her if they couldn't stop Dracula, Jonathan was the only one who wouldn't make the oath. Already promising himself that if she was cursed to it than he would walk backwards into hell to keep her safe and stay with her. He got more vicious in their fights after this. Wielding a kukri knife that he kept on his belt and even rushed forward to slash Dracula across the stomach when they confronted the vampire in his Piccadilly house. It was after this that Dracula fled England and they took chase.

Traveling by train, Mina left in hypnotic trances half the day and night to spy on Dracula, as he was spying on them, Jonathan became upset when Mina insisted they hold burial rites for her before the Crew would split multiple ways to chase Draucla. She forced him to do his part as her beloved even if it hurt. His resolve to kill the vampire and save his wife stronger. He and Arthur traveled by boat pretending to be officials and searching boats on the river for Dracula. The crews frightened each time Jonathan turned his lights on them and would drop to their knees and pray.

It was by horseback that they caught the mercinaries racing with the box holding Dracula. Jonathan raced with all the horse had, jumping from the steed with his blade pulled free and the mercenaries got out of his way with no attempt to stop him, getting on the wagon he lifted and threw the box holding Dracula and all that dirt before jumping to it, ripping the lid off as he and Quincey finished the beat. Jonathan slitting his throat, as Quincey plunged the blade into his heart.

Quincey was mortally wounded, and died in Jonathan's arms, but Mina was free. The Nightmare was over.

Or was it?

They returned to life as normal as they could. Jonathan refusing to stay at the homes of clients after that, more so with Mina quickly becoming with child. They were both happy and had promised each other if it was a boy they would name it for all those who helped save her but Quincey most importantly, and if a girl, then after Lucy. Things were good until eight months in, Mina went into labor early. Jonathan forced to wait with the other men who had come to see the child when it was born, but Mina didn't make it, nor did their son.

Her body was taken away. As Jonathan sat beside their marriage bed that she had died upon staring at the blood. Blaming himself for it all. He didn't remember moving but the smell of the blood over powered him, and it was Jack that yanked him back from the bed, his face covered in the blood of his dead bride. Jonathan screamed in anguish, taken to the room he and Mina shared in Jack's asylum as they reached out to Van Helsing. Jack and Arthur taking turns watching over Jonathan who wouldn't speak much. He did cry on Arthur, he had lost Lucy, he had to know the pain.

Jack had burst in later calling for Art and leaving Jonathan there. They didn’t tell him Mina's body was gone. But he was in no state to be by himself, deep in grief and not at all okay after everything that happened. Walking from the room he saw Jack's medicine cabinet open and drank the full bottle of laudanum. Not even caring if he would be cursed to hell, he couldn't do it anymore.

His wish to be done was nor granted, his eyes popped back open, his friends all around him holding his body down as he screamed. Van Helsing forcing his mouth open, the fangs clear. He went for his stake, but Jack stopped him, convincing him that Jonathan would gladly help hunt and destroy the creatures that ruined him and had hurt Mina. All had decided before finding his body not to tell Jonathan that Mina was gone. Jonathan agreed to be their weapon. Taken to Amsterdam to Van Helsing's home, proving he didn't need the dirt of his home to sleep. Van Helsing's theory was it being due to Jonathan being corrupted away from home.

Fifty years passed in the employ of the Van Helsing family, Jack stopped speaking to Jonathan not long after his turn, but Arthur stayed true, visiting at least once a month until he got married, and he even introduced Lady Godalming to him, and explained he suffered from porphyria. Though he visited less, he still did up until his death. When Van Helsing died, his nephew took over, but Jonathan had sat by Abraham's side as he died, the old man not wanting him there but he had become mean in his old age and no one else wanted to do it. Due to something Van Helsing said as he was dying Jonathan went to his study once the man was dead, and found in his notes the old man had been tracking his lost bride.

Mina had gone to Dracula when she awoke to darkness, they didn't leave trails of bodies behind them. If anything what he read confirmed his thoughts of late. Being a vampire didn't mean they HAD to be a monster. He was thankful in that moment for his enemy. Had Mina returned to him when she turned, Van Helsing would have made him kill her, as he had made Art kill Lucy. At least she was safe. He promised himself to leave her be, let Mina keep the life she had even if it hurt. He still had not removed his wedding ring and he wouldn't.

After Abraham died, the nephew went harder on the hunt of the undead. Expanding to other monsters. A second Kukri knife brought, both dipped in silver. Jonathan had to wear thick leather gloves to wield them. The new Van Helsing made it a decade before he got himself killed facing a werewolf having left Jonathan behind. This the man's sister blamed on Jonathan, and ignored his constant pleas that not all of these creatures seemed evil. He put up with it for a long while, fifty or so years from the day he woke on the floor, he was done.

Jonathan knew he could walk in the sun, he had known for years. He had even whispered it to Abraham as he died. No one guarded him in the day, all expecting he would burst into flames. Taking a trunk that Arthur had gifted him before his death and throwing the case with his blades inside, Jonathan, in his outdated clothes, made his way into the world, running as fast as he could for a train. Stopping long enough at a bank to pull most of his inheritance from Mr. Hawkins out. The agency had been left to another but Jonathan still had a pretty penny set aside from the old man.

Using the documents he had for his travels to get on a ship to America. Unlike Dracula, Jonathan didn't ruin the crew and passengers. He already knew how long he could go between feedings without getting dangerous, due to the Van Helsing's, he also knew from their experiments how much he could drink and stay himself without pushing it. The bare minimum.

He took from most of those he drank from while they slept. A boat had no rules of invitation. Never drinking from the same person twice on the voyage. Keeping to the story of porphyria, he was mostly left alone. When he reached America, claiming his papers were lost on the voyage, taking the name Jonathan Murray, he set about his new life in Post World War II America.

His first stop was to invest his money and set up the proper paperwork for him to both claim the money and assure that upon his 'death' it passed to his next identity. Investing it seemed the best choice to keep it from running out as he bought a new Kodak, and started his journey to explore the new world. Every twenty or so years, Jonathan would change his alias, circling the names of his friends Murray, Holmwood, Morris, and Hawkins. Jonathan had made a few friends along the way, always abandoned when he changed names. One had found him again after, and he pretended to be his own son but Eileen knew better, but played along. He was at her beside with her husband and family when she died, before slipping away to a new name.

His mentors was the last one he was using while living in a small town near Seattle. Still playing as a photographer, and playing his investments. Jonathan worked hard to appear as normal as he could, while still never taking too much blood. He was aimless but enjoying the new world. His heart still belonged to his wife whom he had not seen in a century, but knowing she was likely still as alive as they could be out there and probably happy was all he needed.

Iteration
Jonathan showed signs all through the book that, like Mina, he was tainted by Dracula or the brides, but due to the sexist nature of the Crew of Light this was ignored. Written off as Stress when his hair turned white, or vigor when he swung his large blade or moved things he shouldn't be able to. No, Jonathan was a half vampire too, when Mina died in childbirth, Jonathan took his own life. Unable to handle the idea of being without his wife.

He was spared by the crew of light on the promise he would help hunt vampires, no one told him Mina was undead as well and with Dracula. For the first 50 years of his unlife, he served as a weapon for them to kill other vampires, but he turned sour to it quickly. Realizing he felt the same as he ever did, and the vampires he killed all seemed to just want to live. When Van Helsing died, he learned the truth of Mina. Despite still being deeply in love with her, he didn't peruse her when he broke away from the hunters. Choosing to let her keep the life she made.

Over the years he spent time with the downtrodden pretending to be a photographer. Falling in love with media and the modern world. Learning to take ONLY what he needs to survive while being part of the world. Despite having money, Jonathan works as a photographer as a cover. He is still a very pleasant person despite his heavy guilt. Just wanting to help those around him.

❥ Personality

Option 2. Choose FOUR-FIVE of the following questions to answer and expand upon. You may choose a fifth question if you feel it is integral to your character's personality. Each answer has a 100-300 word requirement.

OPTION 2 QUESTIONS (PICK 4-5) 100-300 WORD LIMIT EACH:

  • What was the most traumatic experience your character endured? How did this change them?
Being trapped at Castle Dracula for months on end, and knowing that his death was coming due to having to write letters lying that he had already left. All Jonathan wanted was to escape, and get back to his beloved Mina. Before being trapped, and psychologically traumatized, Jonathan never would have tried to scale down a castle face with a raging river far below, or run through woods filled with wolves that he had seen eat someone already to escape. Nor would he have become a master at the Kukri blade intending to kill the vampire who not only nearly killed him, but harmed his love and killed her best friend.

  • What is the most important and defining relationship(s) in your character's life, and why?
Wilhelmina Murray-Harker, Jonathan's fiancé then wife. They grew up together as orphans, Jonathan always adored and looked up to Mina. Even breaking gender norms by holding her arm when they walked together instead of vise versa. At least until she became an etiquette teacher and he a solicitor. Mina is his strength, his love, and his driving force. There is nothing he could not, or would not, do for her. An example was him not being happy about her staying with Lucy while he was gone, but not trying to stop it. He wanted her happiness above all. Even if he knew he couldn't keep her in the riches Lucy lived in.

  • What does your character feel like they struggle with still? Where could they improve? This could be physically, mentally, emotionally, or otherwise.
Guilt, Jonathan will always struggle with heavy guilt for not only helping Dracula get to England, even if not on purpose, but causing Mina to be bitten by the beast. They had no secrets between them before Van Helsing and the Suitors convinced Jonathan Mina was too weak to handle it due to being a woman. Had he not listened, she would have been prepared for what happened. This guilt also carries on to her death, even if he knows she lived on and went to Dracula. He blames himself for the pregnancy. He does not blame her for leaving though, had she stayed they would have made him kill her, as they did with Arthur to Lucy.

Plus the murdering of other vampires over the next 50 years. He knows many of them were not bad, and that is innocent blood on his hands. As innocent as any vampire can be. This guilt is why he still won't drink as much as he can, and refuses to kill in feeding unless he has to, or it is a mercy. Jonathan has to learn to forgive himself for the things outside his control.

  • If your character could change one thing about their past, what would it be and why? Or why not?
As much as Jonathan would say he would wish to have never gone to Castle Dracula in the first place, he, himself, knows better. Jonathan had to be the one to go, had Mr. Hawkins been well enough to go, then Dracula would have killed his father figure and likely still Lucy as well. Those he loved would have been no safer, and without Jonathan's journal of all he experienced before reaching the convent, they never would have been able to help Van Helsing further. They likely would have never met, never would have stopped Dracula and his plans to turn England into a feeding ground. Jonathan's long suffered traumas, vampirisim and eventual loss of Mina were all worth it to help protect everyone. Even knowing what he knows now, Jonathan still would have gone and suffered for his loved one's eventual safety.

  • What is a time where your character failed drastically at something and how did it impact them, what did they do about it?
When Jonathan failed to stop Dracula from leaving the castle, which was not a grand attempt, but he swung a shovel down on him while he slept and scarred the vampire. Jonathan allowed an evil onto his beloved homeland of England. This mistake costs lives and pain of many, Lucy's death, the crew of the Demeter, other meals Dracula had. Mina and himself included.

When Mina was bitten he was in a trance asleep in bed beside her, he woke to her bloody the crew of light in their room and her screaming she was unclean when he tried to hold her. His hair turned white that night from it all. From that day, Jonathan worked hard to learn to wield a Kukri knife, bribed and fought to take down Dracula to save Mina. It was his blade that cut the throat of Dracula, putting an end to the nightmare, at least at the time he thought so.
